'small' solo exhibition at the faulkner west

on exhibit from march 1 - 30, 2016 at the faulkner gallery west, santa barbara public library. opening reception, first thursday march 3:

small
recent work - small scale gouaches

gouache is an opaque watercolor medium that lends itself to mixing and layering, much like oil paint. it is also a very portable medium - everything you need can be carried in a satchel or small backpack. all of the images in the show are ladnscapes or things in the landscape - many from places I know well. the work is done mostly on site, composing and laying down the first few layers of color and if not completed on site, adjusted and finished in the studio.

the small scale is challenging - particularly for the landscape. the intimate size draws the viewer into a much larger world, much like early persian and indian miniatures as well as medieval illuminated manuscripts - works I have long admired for their jewel-like quality, intense color and detail.

all works are done on archival mat board, matted and framed.
prices listed with each piece, sold paintings are starred*.

naples with s c a p e

beautiful day for a 'paint-out' with the 'scape' group. fog hovering off the coast and then drifting in. got a good early start with the bright sun, then ended with the foggy, gray. naples is a special place, part of the dos pueblos ranch along the gaviota coast.
